Someone please explain the difference to me? What do you consider graphic art and what do you consider graphic design?

I don't think there really is a big difference between the two, it just depends on personal preference. I like graphic design better, and that's the word I always use. Though I'm sure if one actually searched for the difference, they'd probably find one.

Well the reason that I ask is because I'm a member of another forum that thinks that signatures, banners, and logos, are Graphic ART and you cannot "critique" them :/

Well that's just lame. Just how do they think you create signature and suck? Out of your ass?? You have to "design" the signature.

Any way, that's the point I was trying to get to them. When I posted a portfolio they told me that I should remove the signature section because the signatures are Graphic ART and not graphic design. And their site is for graphic designers not artists.

In a way I can see how they would consider signatures as Graphic ART. However, I'm with muffin, you have to design the piece. In signatures there is a lot of detail that goes into creating it. The fact that they won't critique your signatures because it doesn't fall under their "standards" of Graphic Design is a bit childish. Sounds like you don't need to be a member there.

I don't know that I am going to leave the site, but I'm probably not going to post any more of my work there. There are other boards I enjoy posting in over there.

Yes, I meant such! - That's just crap I'm with tater, I'd leave that site if they are that critical.

Maybe the difference between graphic art and graphic design is a simple concept. For example, graphic design could mean that you create everything your self. Where as graphic art you manipulate images to make them look cool. I understand that you design the art to manipulate an image, but it is technically art.

I suppose I can understand that logic, but it is still kind of ridiculous that they refuse to critique signature designs.
