Now, this article, including a picture of the woman described can be found HERE. This is a local story that is near and dear to my heart in a way because I know the family of this woman very well. I just can't believe that she hated her life this much to ruin it. I understand that we all make mistakes, but this is just ridiculous!
Dorchester County authorities acting on a tip intercepted a woman accused of trying to deliver cell phones, tools and more than 1,900 pills to Lieber Correctional Institute in Ridgeville.
Terri Diane Newman, 35, of Greer was arrested Wednesday morning near the junction of interstates 95 and 26. Before her sport utility vehicle was pulled over, between mile markers 177 and 178, it drifted several times over the solid line to its right, the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said.
Newman is charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle and aiding in the escape of a prisoner. She is being held in the Dorchester County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, a Sheriff's Office report said.
Sheriff's Maj. John Garrison said the S.C. Department of Corrections at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday advised the Sheriff's Office that an attempt to smuggle contraband to prisoners might be under way. Deputies were asked to look out for a white woman with blonde hair, driving a maroon Dodge Durango, and expected to be headed eastbound from Columbia to Lieber between 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The sheriff's office also was told that the woman was believed to be armed and dangerous. Deputies in cars took positions at the county line, and within five minutes a new, maroon Durango passed by, the report states.
While two deputies in one squad car was following it, the Durango began to "drift over the solid line to its right multiple times and drift carelessly back and forth in its own lane," the report said.
Once backup units were in place, the Durango was pulled over. The driver was ordered out of the SUV and told to get on her knees. She was initially charged with the traffic offense, the report said.
According to the report, a search of the car turned up pliers, screwdrivers and other tools, hacksaw blades, a box cutter, super glue, lighters, cigarettes, cell phones wrapped in pairs with chargers, pens, locks, 1,936 white pills in a one-gallon ziplock bag, and a box of .45-caliber ammunition.
The pills were determined to be three different forms of narcotics, the report states.
The arrest is the second in recent weeks of a woman allegedly trying to sneak contraband to prisoners. Tammy Lynn Phillips, 42, of Denmark was arrested in late February by authorities who said she smuggled 58 grams of marijuana into Lieber.
Phillips is facing charges of possessing a controlled substance and possessing prison contraband.
According to an incident report, Phillips was caught with the pot while at Lieber to visit an inmate. The Department of Corrections is investigating both of the recent smuggling incidents.
